GCr15 Hard Chrome Bearing Shaft

Core and Working Surface

GCr15 forms the body of the shaft. The chrome layer is applied to the outside diameter, where the bearing or bushing travels. It should not be confused with a stainless-steel shaft or treated as proof that every exposed surface is corrosion resistant.

 

Finished diameter must be measured after plating. If coating thickness is important to the bearing fit, it needs to be included in the production specification together with the required outside-diameter tolerance.

 

Chrome plating also does not correct shaft bending. Straightness, finished length and support spacing remain separate checks, particularly when the shaft is mounted only at its ends.

 

Machined Areas

Threads, flats, steps and drilled holes may interrupt the plated surface. These features should be positioned outside the bearing's normal travel so the rolling elements and seals remain on one continuous cylindrical track.

 

A shaft cut from plated stock may have exposed base steel at its end faces. If the installation is humid or frequently washed, end-face protection and the treatment of newly machined areas should be stated on the drawing.

 

During assembly, sharp transitions between a reduced end and the working diameter must not pass directly through a bearing seal without a suitable lead-in. This prevents the seal from catching on the edge.

Is this shaft made entirely from chrome?

No. GCr15 is the shaft material, while chrome is applied as an outside surface layer.

Is a hard-chrome shaft the same as a stainless-steel shaft?

No. They use different materials and corrosion-control methods. The required environment should be stated before selection.

Can a linear bearing travel across a thread or flat?

These features should normally remain outside the working stroke because they interrupt the continuous running surface.

Are the cut ends automatically chrome plated?

Not necessarily. End treatment depends on whether the shaft is plated before or after cutting and machining, so it must be confirmed with the order.

Which specifications are needed besides diameter and length?

State the finished diameter tolerance, straightness, surface requirement, support arrangement and every machined feature.

Can the shaft be made from a finished drawing?
