The threaded socket is formed inside the straight end of the housing. It screws onto a matching male control rod or cylinder connection, leaving the circular bearing eye available for a pin, bolt or pivot shaft.

 

A grease fitting is installed beneath the threaded body. This gives lubricant a direct route into the spherical contact area without removing the rod end from the linkage. The fitting must remain accessible after the surrounding brackets and guards are installed.

 

The inner ring can tilt relative to the housing. This movement accommodates the angular change of a linkage, but it is not intended to correct a large permanent offset between two incorrectly positioned mounting points.

Thread engagement should be checked before the joint is loaded. The rod must use the correct diameter and pitch and should enter far enough to provide secure engagement without bottoming against the closed end of the socket.

 

A locknut can be used on the connecting rod to hold the final adjustment. Tighten the locknut against the rod-end body rather than using the spherical inner ring as a handle, as force applied through the bearing eye can mark the contact surfaces.

 

During maintenance, add lubricant in controlled amounts. Grease appearing around the spherical ring indicates that the internal space has been filled; continued pumping can displace seals or attract excess contamination around the joint.
