When a moving fixture has unwanted play

On a shaft-guided fixture, movement across the shaft and movement along it are different concerns. The carriage needs to travel freely along its working stroke, but excess radial clearance can allow the attached fixture to shift under a changing load.

SCAJ provides adjustment at this bearing-to-shaft interface. The housing has a longitudinal slit, and the bearing insert uses an adjustable outer ring. Turning the adjustment screw applies compression around the insert, reducing clearance between the rolling elements and the shaft. This offers a way to refine the fit while keeping the existing carriage mounting arrangement.

The adjustment does not change screw-drive backlash or straighten a misaligned guide shaft. Its purpose is specifically to control the fit of the linear bearing.

What moves with the load

The aluminum housing carries the fixture through four threaded mounting holes. Inside it, recirculating balls run directly against the hardened guide shaft. Retaining rings locate the bearing insert axially, while seals at both ends help limit dirt entering with the shaft.

These details divide the work between the components: the housing provides the mounting interface, the bearing carries the rolling contact, and the adjustment screw alters the fit. The screw is not a brake and should not be tightened until the carriage locks.

A useful setting for the SCAJ Fine Adjustment Linear Bearing Unit reduces unwanted movement without creating tight spots along the stroke. This balance matters more than simply achieving the tightest possible fit. The final setting should be checked with the housing fastened in its working position, since mounting distortion can also affect bearing movement.
