Clamp Hub Coupling With Spider
A three-part shaft connection consisting of two clamping hubs and a central elastomer spider. It is used between a motor and driven shaft where torque reversals, starting shock and minor alignment errors must be absorbed without a rigid metal-to-metal joint.
Description
Product Details
Each metal hub has projecting jaws that engage alternate sections of the elastomer spider. Under normal operating conditions, torque passes from the driving hub through the compressed elastomer and then into the driven hub.
The hubs are secured by clamping screws. This method grips the shaft around the bore instead of relying on a single screw point pressing against the shaft surface. Aluminum-alloy and stainless-steel hub options are listed on the original page.
Three elastomer hardness grades are available. A softer spider generally provides greater cushioning, while a harder version produces a firmer torsional response. The exact grade must be selected according to transmitted torque, reversal frequency and positioning requirements.
Product Description
Installation begins with confirming both shaft diameters. The two coupling bores do not have to be identical, but each side must match its corresponding motor or driven shaft.
The hubs should be positioned with the required axial space for the spider. Pushing the shafts together inside the coupling or allowing the hubs to contact each other can prevent the elastomer from working correctly.
Although the spider can accommodate limited radial, angular and axial displacement, it should not be used to correct visibly poor shaft alignment. Excessive offset concentrates pressure on individual elastomer lobes and can produce uneven wear.
During maintenance, inspect the spider for cracks, permanent flattening, swelling or missing material. The clamp screws should also be checked after initial operation, especially in systems with frequent starting, stopping or directional changes.
The elastomer separates the two hubs and provides a degree of electrical isolation. This characteristic should not be treated as certified electrical protection unless the complete coupling has been tested for the required voltage and safety standard.
FAQ
Can the coupling operate in both rotational directions?
Yes. The jaw-and-spider structure can transmit torque clockwise or counterclockwise when the hubs and elastomer are correctly installed.
Does a flexible coupling remove the need for shaft alignment?
No. It accepts only limited misalignment. The motor and driven shaft should still be aligned before the clamp screws are tightened.
How should the elastomer hardness be selected?
Selection depends on torque, torsional stiffness, vibration, reversing frequency, temperature and environmental exposure. Confirm the required grade before ordering.
When should stainless-steel hubs be considered?
They may be selected where the operating environment or mechanical requirement makes stainless steel preferable to lightweight aluminum alloy.
Can different bore sizes be supplied on the two sides?
We build to customer drawings under OEM/ODM, and accept orders as small as a single piece for standard sizes.
