Circulation Type
Ball screws move load by circulating balls between the screw shaft and the nut, and there are two ways to do that. Internal circulation keeps the balls in constant contact with the screw throughout the cycle, using a reversing mechanism built into the nut - this gives a more compact nut and higher rigidity, and suits medium-to-small lead lengths where precision matters most. External circulation lets the balls leave the screw surface during return travel, cycling through an external tube or spiral groove instead - simpler to manufacture, but with a larger radial size, and better suited to heavy-duty loads than tight precision.

How It Works
As the screw shaft rotates, balls roll along the raceways between the shaft and the nut, turning rotational motion into linear motion (or the reverse). Because it's rolling friction rather than sliding friction, transmission efficiency runs above 90% - compared to the 30-50% typical of a conventional trapezoidal lead screw. That efficiency gap is the main reason ball screws replace lead screws in precision equipment: less input torque wasted as heat means less motor load and more predictable positioning.
