EGW Self-Aligning Guide Rail

Rolling balls between the rail and block cut the coefficient of friction to roughly 1/50 of a traditional sliding guide, and the restraint between rail and block lets it carry load in both the up-down and left-right directions at once - not just one axis, which is what makes it worth pairing with a precision ball screw instead of a plain slideway.

 

The raceway itself is cut as a circular arc with contact points set at 45 degrees, and that geometry does two things. First, it gives the rail a self-aligning capability - small installation errors from surface irregularities get absorbed through slight elastic deformation and a shift in contact point, so the rail doesn't need a perfectly machined mounting surface to run smoothly. Second, that same wide contact width between ball and raceway is why the rail holds equal load ratings in the radial, reverse-radial, and lateral directions - high rigidity in all four directions rather than being strong one way and weak another.
