Custom Ball Screws: When Standard Sizes Stop Making Sense

Most ball screw orders start the same way - an engineer opens a catalog, finds something close to what the machine needs, and builds the design around what is available. That works fine for a lot of applications, and standard catalog sizes exist precisely because the most common requirements cluster around a handful of shaft diameters and lead combinations. But there is a point in machine design where working around a catalog size costs more than it saves, and that is where custom ball screw production starts making sense.

 

The most straightforward case is end machining. A standard ball screw ships with the shaft ends left at a fixed geometry - the same stepped profile that fits the most common bearing and nut arrangements. If the machine's drive layout, bearing housing, or coupling type calls for something different, the options are either modifying the screw after the fact or ordering it machined to the right spec from the start. Modifying a hardened ball screw shaft after grinding is slow, expensive, and risks heat damage to the thread if it is not done carefully. Getting the end profile right at production is cleaner on every count.

 

Thread length and overall shaft length are the other common reasons buyers go custom. Catalog screws come in fixed lengths, and cutting one down is straightforward enough, but adding length is not an option once the thread is ground. If a machine design calls for a specific combination of threaded length, smooth shaft sections, and total length that does not match anything in a standard lineup, a custom-ground screw is the only path that does not involve redesigning the machine around the part.

 

Compatibility is worth raising here as well. A custom ball screw produced to a consistent thread form and lead tolerance works with a range of nut types - SFU, BHSR, SFE, SFS and others - as long as the shaft specification matches what those nuts are designed for. That gives procurement teams room to source nuts from multiple suppliers without locking into a single source for the complete assembly, which matters when lead times or pricing shift across a production run.

 

From a manufacturing standpoint, custom ball screw production requires the same grinding and inspection process as standard screws - the thread form, lead accuracy, surface finish, and hardness all follow the same quality path. The difference is that the input dimensions come from the customer's drawing rather than a catalog spec sheet. For high-volume orders, having a dedicated production run also means better consistency batch to batch than pulling from mixed stock.

 

For machine builders working on equipment that does not fit standard catalog dimensions, submitting a drawing and getting a direct quotation is usually faster than the workarounds.
