Linear Shaft

May 25, 2026

In the architecture of linear motion, the Linear Shaft serves as the critical rail upon which all precision depends. While it may appear to be a simple steel rod to the untrained eye, any seasoned machinist will tell you that the performance of your linear bushings is entirely at the mercy of the shaft's surface integrity. Using a low-quality, soft steel bar instead of a precision-engineered guide is a recipe for disaster; the internal bearings of your carriage will quickly gall the surface, leading to increased friction, vibration, and eventual system seizure. A high-performance Linear Shaft is designed to provide a hard, wear-resistant "skin" while maintaining a tough, flexible core that can withstand the bending moments of heavy industrial loads.

Our manufacturing process for these components is centered on achieving a perfect balance between surface hardness and dimensional consistency. We utilize premium SUJ2 (high-carbon chromium bearing steel) or SUS440C stainless steel, subjecting every rod to advanced high-frequency induction hardening. This creates a hardened layer of HRC 60-64, reaching a depth of 0.8mm to 2.5mm depending on the diameter. This "case hardening" is vital because it prevents the recirculating steel balls of the bearing from deforming the raceway under high-pressure contact. Following heat treatment, the Linear Shaft undergoes a multi-stage centerless grinding process, followed by precision polishing. This ensures a surface roughness of Ra 0.8 or better and a diameter tolerance typically within the g6 or h6 range. For applications in cleanrooms or harsh outdoor environments, we provide optional hard chrome plating, which not only boosts corrosion resistance but also lowers the coefficient of friction for even smoother travel.

Selecting the right material and support configuration is what separates a reliable automation cell from one that requires constant maintenance. If you are building a CNC router or a large-scale 3D printer, a standard hardened steel shaft is the industry benchmark for cost-effectiveness and rigidity. However, for medical or food-grade machinery where wash-down procedures are frequent, a stainless steel Linear Shaft is mandatory to prevent oxidation. Furthermore, you must consider the "deflection" of the rod over long distances. For strokes exceeding 500mm, we often recommend using supported rail assemblies to prevent the shaft from bowing under its own weight, ensuring that your carriage maintains a perfectly horizontal path throughout its entire movement.

Troubleshooting & Field FAQ

Why is there visible scoring or "grooving" on my shaft after minimal use?

This usually indicates a hardness mismatch or contamination. If the Linear Shaft is not properly case-hardened to HRC 60+, the bearing balls will act like a cutting tool. Additionally, if fine abrasive dust gets trapped under the carriage seals, it acts like grinding paste. Always ensure you are using induction-hardened shafts and check your bellows for leaks.

Can I machine the ends of the shaft for mounting myself?

It is difficult because the surface is extremely hard. If you try to turn it on a standard lathe, you will likely ruin your cutting bits. To machine a Linear Shaft, you must first grind away the hardened case layer or use specialized carbide tooling. We strongly recommend ordering pre-machined shafts with tapped holes or stepped ends to ensure concentricity.

What is the best way to prevent rust on non-plated shafts?

If you aren't using chrome-plated or stainless versions, the shaft relies on a thin film of oil. In high-humidity environments, standard grease might not be enough. Regularly wipe down the Linear Shaft with a light machine oil or use a grease with high-tack additives that won't drip off the vertical surfaces.
